FRESNO, C.A. – The California Labor Federation’s endorsement of Esmeralda Soria for Congress over 16-year Democratic incumbent was announced today by labor leaders from Fresno-Madera-Tulare-Kings counties, Central Labor Council.
Dozens of volunteers from the council’s affiliated unions gathered to contact voters after the early morning rally and announcement.
“In the labor movement, what we want are champions for working families. The status quo in District 16 is the same as it is in Washington DC, so it is our job to challenge that status quo. We have to call it like it is. We have members of congress in our own backyards who pretend to be for workers, who give us lip service, but at the end of the day do not give us the votes, the compassion, and the economic opportunities we demand,” said Dillon Savory, Executive Director of the Fresno-Madera-Tulare-Kings, Central Labor Council.
Esmeralda is a proud union sister. She has always stood with labor even before serving on the Fresno City Council. She championed for workers when she helped save 150 sanitation jobs during the Measure G fight in 2013 and championed for SEIU home care workers in their fight for a $1 raise.
“Our working families do not have a voice in Congress right now. They are struggling to pay for their healthcare, they are struggling to pay for housing costs, and they are struggling to pay for their education. The leadership in Congress isn’t fighting hard enough for us. We have to change that!” said Esmeralda Soria.
The Central Labor Council is comprised of 53 local unions that span four counties and represent more than 105,000 Central Valley residents.
After interviewing candidates for Congressional District 16, the Executive Board voted to recommend Soria to the California Labor Federation convention. The convention delegates voted to endorse Soria without debate in early December.
Esmeralda has spent the last six years as the only woman on the Fresno City Council. When elected, she will be the first ever woman and first Latina to serve Congressional District 16.
